Ballyquintin

Architect

Micah T. Jones

This project encompasses the design of a single storey cottage located on the edge of the Irish Sea. To achieve a low carbon structure hemp block walls were used, whilst still ensuring that the thermal and acoustic requirements are maintained. The cottage boasts a unique structural system featuring glulam purlins and ridge beams supported by a series of glulam portal frames. A combination of the portal frames and glulam timber diagonal braces provide lateral stability. The glulam frames are connected to the concrete foundations through steel plate cruciform stubs. This robust connection ensures the transfer of both gravitational and lateral loads to the foundations, securing the cottage’s stability in the serene setting.
